Stem Presentation: Dr. Birkbeck
This was our second STEM presentation this year. We were fortunate to meet Anthony's grandfather, Dr. Birkbeck. Dr. Birkbeck's profession, plastic surgery, and his hobby, restoring antique cars, have many similarites. Please watch the video. Watching the video will refresh your memory of the presentation. As you watch the video you will be reminded of Dr. Birkbeck's many interests, his education and his involvement in STEM.

What do you think was the coolest thing Dr. Birkbeck talked about and why do you think so?

ReplyDeleteThe coolest thing that I think was how he had all those cool cars and how he can make them faster I think that story about the car was funny !!!

ReplyDeleteReina: I enjoyed learning about the connection between Plastic Surgery and Fixing Up cars. I liked when Dr. Birkbeck said he was like a sculptor - using his creativity and talents to help people/things become the best that they could be. I especially liked learning how he helped people who had cleft palette. He made a difference and that's special.

I am pleased that you understood the connection between Dr. Birkbeck's hobby and his profession and that you were able to key into his reference to being a sculptor. I, too, believe that Dr. Birkbeck has made a significant difference in many people's lives.

I think that this is the coolest thing that Dr.Birkbeck talked about because it takes a lot of hard work to repair and paint a car, especially many years ago, when people did not have the same technology as they do now.
ReplyDeleteHalt says: I think that all the work that Dr. Birkbeck did was really cool. Fixing cars and tuning them to go faster is a spectacular thing to do. When he did plastic surgery, it helped a lot of people by helping them with a type of disfiguration that prevented them from doing something. The chemistry must have been a lot of fun and his work with simple machines to transport heavy things. His attitude of flying high like Charles Lindberg must have made him dream about doing something different in the world by doing these professions.
ReplyDeleteI think it was interesting how he had a chemistry lab in his bedroom. It was also very cool how his profesion and hobby were connected. Plastic surgery and cars are very simmalar because they both need to reconstruct things (cars and bodies) to make them work better and look better. I can see how he liked to do both things.
ReplyDeleteI think the most intresting thing Dr. Birkbeck talked about was the science that was behind restoring body parts (when he said that you take some skin from other parts of the body to replace the skin).

ReplyDeleteI thought that it was very cool how Dr.Birckbeck got to fix and deal with all of those cool cars, and I espesialy liked the car where you can sit in the trunk. It was also really impresive how he remembered the names of all of the old fasioned cars he had to repair. When I grow up, I soooooooooo want the car where you cold sit in the trunk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ReplyDeletelizardking, I think when he talked about burns because it was really interesting of how many degrees there is and that it is the hardest thing to mold.
ReplyDeletefamilylover: i thought that the coolest thing was when was talking about all those cars.but another cool thing was when he said that he took air plane lessons when he was 15. i thought that this was cool beause now 15 year olds arent alound to ride air planes there not even aloud to drive cars.

I think that is so cool because even though people and cars are totally different he found a way that they can be similar. Something else that i thought was cool, was the balloon experimants he did in his closet!

I think the coolest thing about Dr. Birkbeck is that he has such an AWESOME grandson.

And that he was a doctor and he helped kids who had their mouths all messed up. I was really sad to me. I think he will continue what he is still doing.
