STEM Speaker Series: Data Collection in Environmental Studies

Environmental Science is interdisciplinary because many scientists with different training are needed to solve complex problems: ie., physicists, chemists, biologists, meteorologists, and oceanographers to name a few.  Elaine's mom, Yixian, showed us how data is collected from the Ipswich River Watershed. We learned how important collecting data is when monitoring the environment.

  1. Thank you, Yixian, for spending part of the morning teaching us in general about Environmental Science and specifically about data collecting. Your experiment was a great demonstration showing how data can be collected and the many ways it can be used.

  3. thank you so much for teaching us about environmental science! it was very interesting! I especially LOVED the experiment! that was cool when the water awas a different color, and then you changed it back to clear water!!
thank you again for taking the time out of your day to spend the morning teaching us!!

  4. Dear Yixian,
Thamk you for coming to our school and teaching us about what you do. I though the test you showed us was really cool! I didn't know that the tempature could affect the level of oxegyn in the water.
    Thanks,
    Emma

    1. Benji,
That is a very good question. Tests performed in environmental studies should not be dangerous, because otherwise these tests do not serve the purpose of protecting the environment and human health. However, some of the chemicals that we use in the tests can be harmful to human body if the person performing the tests do not wear proper protection. For example, acids can be corrosive to the skin. That is why we need to put on protection such as gloves and sometimes safety glasses when performing the tests.

      Hope this helps.
